Today there will be a speaker at both Masses on the work of ‘Survive-Miva.’ This organisation, based in Liverpool, exists to provide one vital element to ensure the success of the Church’s healthcare and pastoral work in under-developed countries – mobility. There will be a retiral collection at the end of Mass for their work.
Today there is a letter from the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland concerning the Year of Faith which opens in October 11th (Tuesday). It contains information on certain events and activities which the Bishops are proposing to hold in the course of the year. Please make sure you take a copy away with you to read. There is also a prayer card with a special prayer for you to say as often and whenever you can.
What is the Year of Faith ? At certain times in the history of the Church, Popes have called upon the people to dedicate themselves to deepening their understanding of a particular aspect of the faith. The last one was held in 1967 and was called by Pope Paul VI to commemorate the martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul. The upcoming Year of Faith, called by Pope Benedict XVI, is what he calls “a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Saviour of the world.” This is a quote from the document ‘Porta Fidei’ proclaiming the year. He hopes it will provide us with an opportunity to experience a conversion, to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. He has described this experience as “opening the door of faith”, a door which is opened at Baptism and which we are called to reopen it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew our relationship with Christ and the Church. It begins on the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and also the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Church, described by the Pope as “a precious and valuable tool” in our efforts.
There will be events at National and local level and the Parish Pastoral Councils of St. Cuthbert’s and Our Lady’s are meeting together in the near future to plan the local events. There is also a wealth of information to be found on the official web site annusfidei.va for those with internet access. In the meantime please pray that we will take advantage of the opportunities presented to us to grow in our faith.
Sunday: The Fair Trade group will be in charge of the Coffee Morning in the hall after Mass. All are welcome to go round to the Hall.
Please remember that as a Fair Trade Parish, all groups operating under the name of St. Cuthbert’s should be using Fair Trade tea, coffee etc I think this has been slipping slightly recently.
Tuesday: Fourth and final in a series of four lectures under the title ‘Vatican II, Fifty Golden Years -Part 2’. The speaker is Father Gerry O’Hanlon S.J. whose current writings deal with the Second Vatican Council. He will be speaking on ‘Religious Freedom.’ Fuller details are on the poster in the porch. The meeting is at 7.30 p.m. in the Lauriston Centre.
Diary Dates:
16th October: A Mass is being celebrated in St. Margaret’s Chapel at Gillis at 7.30pm to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Fr. Jimmy Henry, the first rector of what was then Gillis College. All are welcome to go along and take part.
18th November: The Sale of Work will take place after the 10.00 a.m. Mass. To get things underway, a list is at the back of the Church with the various stalls we have had in the past and spaces for any new ones to be added. Above all we need volunteers to look after the stalls. If you can help, please sign up as soon as possible. Nearer the time there will be a meeting of all volunteers. This will be the last big push for the current Parish Project with 75% of the money collected over the last two years going to Aid to the Church in Need and 25% to Mary’s meals. More details about the collection of goods for sale will be given soon but in the meantime if you are going off to exotic places during the School October break, don’t forget the sale on your way back through the Duty Free !
The Stall has the new edition of Living Faith, covering October – December, priced £1.40 available along with Catholic diaries for 2013. Why not pay a visit.
Over the past few weeks, a significant number of hymn books and Mass card text cards have disappeared from the Church. If you have, by chance, taken them home, inadvertently of course, would you please return them as soon as possible. Thank you.
With every best wish and blessing
to you, your families and those
who are dear to you.
Monsignor Tony.
