Today marks the start of Prisoners’ Week in Scotland, a week when we are asked to think about and pray for all those affected by crime and injustice be they prisoners, their families and friends, prison staff. We ask for healing for those who have been wounded, physically or emotionally, by the activities of others i.e. the victims of crime.
Today: The Book of Remembrance will be available at the back of the Church in which you can add the names of relatives, friends or parishioners who have died within the past twelve months. If names are already entered they do not need to be repeated.
Sunday: The Coffee Morning will take place after Mass with bacon rolls etc available. This weekend the Vocations Group will be in charge. Why not make time to pop round to the Hall and see what is on offer as well as meeting fellow parishioners. The monthly draw for the 200 Club will also take place.
Monday: St. Thomas of Aquin’s High School Mass for deceased pupils, staff and families will take place in the school Oratory at 7.00 p.m.
Tuesday: The 18 – 30 group are going to see a film on the Vatican Museums at Cineworld on 18th of November at 7p.m. If you would like a ticket or further information and go along with them please contact Victoria Stephens at vs514@hotmail.com or phone her on 0131 443 9778. Tickets need to be booked in advance.
Thursday: Remembrance Mass for deceased pupils, staff and friends of St. Augustine’s High School at 7.00 p.m. in the School Oratory. All welcome to be present and pray for those they wish to remember.
Friday: ‘Sangstream’, Edinburgh’s Scots folk choir will give a concert in St Cuthbert’s hall at 7.30 p.m. in aid of the Parish Project. The choir, which sings traditional and contemporary Scots songs, has performed throughout the Edinburgh area. It is hoped you will come to support the charity and at the same time have an enjoyable evening hearing their rich sound. The choir has also performed in Italy and Denmark. Tickets, priced £7.00 or £5 concession will be available after Mass.
Diary Dates:
25th November: Over the years a gallant band of volunteers have taken the time and effort to clean the hall on a regular basis. Sadly the numbers involved have dropped to a level where the remaining members cannot continue. To find out if there are any parishioners willing and able to help in this area of parish life there will be a meeting at 6.00 p.m. in the Hall to explain what is involved and see if enough come forward to create 2/3 teams.
25th November: Meeting for parents of children in P3 who will be celebrating their First Reconciliation in 2015. This is to explain what will be happening during the ceremony on 7th December. It will be in the Church Hall at 7.00 p.m.
27th November: Mass of Remembrance for all deceased parishioners, relatives and friends in St. Cuthbert’s at 7.00 p.m.
30th November: Ceremony of Enrolment for children in P4 who will eligible to be confirmed and make their First Communion in 2015.
30th November: Carol Service and Blessing of Crib in St. Andrew’s Square at 3.00 p.m.. All welcome to go along and take part.
3rd December: ‘Where does Scotland stand on assisted suicide ?’ As the debate continues its way through the Scottish parliament, two distinguished catholic physicians, Professor Anthony Busuttil, professor emeritus of Forensic Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and Professor Robert A. Minns, Professor emeritus of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Edinburgh explore the present state of the discussion. It is in the Lauriston Centre at from 7.30 p.m. – 9.00 p.m. All welcome.
Votive Candle Stand: Only by luck was a fire avoided recently at the votive candle stand. This was caused by people overloading the candle stand and balancing candles on edges and corners due to the flat tray being full. This is very dangerous. If the stand is full please light your candle, blow it out and put it on the window ledge. Once a space becomes available it will be relit and put in in place.
Advent begins two weeks today. As in previous years we will be collecting gifts for prisoners’ children at Christmas. The gifts will be collected at all Masses on Sunday 30th November and 7th December. The gift should be new, wrapped in Christmas paper and bearing a label showing the suitable age of the child and whether for a boy or girl. Gifts for older children of 12+ years would especially be appreciated. Last year there was a difficulty meeting the demand for boys’ presents in general, but particularly older boys. Music or book tokens would be very welcome or even gift cards that could be put towards PlayStation or Xbox related items. These can be purchased in most supermarkets. Thank you in anticipation of your kindness. On the final two Sundays of Advent we will collect for the homeless, these gifts being given out via the St. Catharine’s Convent Homeless project.
