Today is the World Day of Prayer for the Missions. There will be a retiral collection after both Masses for ‘Mission Matters’ the new name for Missio. The focus this year is on supporting the Church in Mongolia. The current Bishop arrived there just over 20 years ago with two other priests in what was then a non-Christian country where many generations had never heard of Jesus Christ. It was known by subsequent missionaries as ‘the hardship country.’ Over the past 20 years the number of Christian communities has increased but there are still areas where the Gospel has not been preached but with no local priests or sisters notr very little local income to sustain the ongoing work due to extreme and widespread poverty the people of Mongolia urgently need our help.
Sunday: The Coffee Morning will take place after Mass with bacon rolls etc available. This weekend the Vocations Group will be in charge. Why not make time to pop round to the Hall and see what is on offer as well as meeting fellow parishioners.
The monthly draw for the 200 Club will also take place.
Diary Dates:
29th October: Meeting of P4 parents of children who are eligible for Confirmation and First Communion in 2015. It is at 7.00 p.m. in the Church Hall. I hope every child will be represented at this important meeting. The children need not be present.
10th November: Meeting of existing St. Cuthbert’s Parish Pastoral Council in the house at 7.00 p.m. All councillors please make every effort to be present.
13th November: Meeting of all those who have expressed an interest in becoming a Parish Pastoral Councillor at 7.00 p.m. in the Church Hall. It is an information evening and no commitment is made by coming along.
14th – 16th November: The Catholic Youth Service for Scotland are running a national Youth Event in Gartmore House near Aberfoyle for 14 – 25 years old. Fuller details are on the poster in the porch.
21st November: ‘Sangstream’, Edinburgh’s Scots folk choir will give a concert in St Cuthbert’s hall at 7.30 p.m. in aid of the Parish Project. The choir, which sings traditional and contemporary Scots songs, has performed throughout the Edinburgh area. It is hoped you will come to support the charity and at the same time have an enjoyable evening hearing their rich sound. The choir has also performed in Italy and Denmark. Tickets and further information will be available soon but in the meantime please put the date in your diary.
Parish Pastoral Council: Over the past joint meetings of the Parish Pastoral Council meetings of St. Cuthbert’s and Our Lady’s, a great deal of discussion has taken place about revitalising the Councils in both Parishes. As a result of people retiring or moving away the number of Councillors has dropped significantly. The need therefore is to encourage new councillors to come forward.
A strong, vibrant and active Council is going to be vital for the future of both Parishes as Archbishop Cushley’s plans for the future of the Archdiocese emerge over the next weeks and months.
If you are interested please sign on the sheet at the back of the Church. It would be good for a real cross section of the parish to be represented. The list will remain at the back of the Church until the end of October after which, on 13th November, there will be a meeting for all those who have expressed an interest to hear about what is involved and what could be happening before making a decision as to whether or not you decide to go ahead. Depending on how many names are on the list elections may have to take place. Putting your name on the list and coming to the meeting does not commit you in any way.

I am grateful to them for providing this support and to the parishioners who will be looking after the house and leading the liturgies on weekdays.
