Today is Remembrance Sunday when we remember and pray for all those who have died as a result of war. We pray that their sacrifices have not been in vain and that one day peace will reign in our world.
Today: Due to the amount of information needing to be published it has been necessary to produce a supplement to the Bulletin so please make sure you have you copy. Please also make sure you have your copy of the preparatory document for the Synod of Bishops.
Sunday: The Hall work while not fully completed is sufficiently advanced to allow the normal Sunday Coffee Mornings to resume after 10.00 a.m. Mass with the Noisy Nutters in charge. Bacon rolls etc will be available.
Monday: The Annual Mass of Remembrance for all deceased Lourdes Pilgrims and benefactors takes place in St. Catharine’s Convent at 7.30 p.m. All welcome.
Monday: Latest in the Lauriston Lecture series will be given by Father Geoffrey Wheaton S.J. on ‘Caravaggio – Pope Francis’ favourite painter.’ It is at 7.30 p.m. in the Lauriston Hall.
Tuesday: Meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council at 7.00 p.m. in the Church House. All Councillors please make every effort to attend this meeting. The agenda is ready for collection in the sacristy. You should have received your minutes already.
Diary Dates:
19th November: Mass of Remembrance for former pupils, staff and friends of St. Augustine’s High School. It will take place in the Oratory at the School at 7.00 p.m.

24th November: Rent-a-Table to raise funds for the Parish Project. This is an opportunity to show off your skills and talents in a different way. It will take place in tandem with the Coffee Morning after Mass. You ‘buy’ a table for £15 which will go to the Parish Project Fund and from it you sell whatever you want as long as it is legal. It could be knitting, homemade cards, no restrictions. What you make, you keep, unless of course you want to make a further donation to the Parish Project. For further information contact Frances Divit, 444.1635 or Ben Malone 443.1708. There is a list at the back of the Church on which you can sign if interested.
26th November: Meeting in the Hall at 7.00 p.m. for the parents of children in P4 who are preparing for Confirmation & First Communion. I hope every child will be represented. The children do not need to be present.
27th November: Meeting in the hall at 7.00 p.m. for the parents of children in P3 preparing for the celebration of their First Reconciliation. I hope every child will be represented. The children do not need to be present.
Primary 1 Enrolment: Was your child born between 28th February 2009 & 28th February 2010 and do you live within the school catchment area. ? Then your child can be enrolled at St. Cuthbert’s for the August 2014 intake on Tuesday from 1.30 p.m. – 2.30 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9.30 a.m. – 11.30 a.m. If these times do not suit, an appointment can be made to enrol your child at a different time.

The very positive School Review, carried out by the City of Edinburgh Council, stated, “There was a consistently high standard of learning and teaching throughout the school.” If you are thinking about other schools, go and visit St. Cuthbert’s first before you make your mind up.

You are also welcome to visit the school prior to enrolling to see what the staff and pupils have to offer your child.
The Hall Kitchen is almost back to normal. In the course of the work an incredible amount of out of date food sauce and other materials were unearthed. The general materials have either been returned or binned. It is essential that other users e.g. coffee morning organisers go round and decide what they want to keep from their stores. All the group material is still in the side Hall. Anything left after next Sunday will be considered rubbish and disposed of accordingly. No loose food should ever be left e.g. cakes and pancakes. No food out of date should be left. Anything which has to be left should be in a sealed container not an open box and above all be kept tidily. Any kitchen equipment or utensils used should be washed thoroughly after use.
Breaking News: On returning from Lourdes, there was a message, asking me to contact Archbishop Cushley as soon as possible. Fearing the worst, I eventually made contact with him to be told that he was graciously appointing me to become a member of the Metropolitan Chapter of Canons. The installation will take place during 12.45 p.m. Mass in the Cathedral on December 17th. If you are able to come along, you will be welcome. It is quite humbling and a privilege to be invited to take up this post. It also a bit surreal at this stage.
At the end of the month, a new venture is being launched in the parish. Fresh Start, the charity which does so much excellent work in and around the city in terms of helping homeless people settle into flats etc. is launching a new scheme. Up until now it has supplied materials like cookers, furniture and so on to help people set up their new homes. They have not provided food but as a result of a growing number of people approaching them for help, they are launching The Food Station’, which will be based in the Phoenix Club in Harrison Place. It will provide a variety of services but, a sign of the current difficulties people are facing, they are now going to provide food packs. To support the venture, the Parish Pastoral Council is proposing that once a month, baskets will be at the back of the Church to collect food which will then be taken to the Centre for packing and distribution. There is a specific list, provided by Fresh Start, printed overleaf of the food that is to be collected and this will be given out in due course. Needless to say that everything must be in date and you need to check use by dates before giving anything in. Volunteers will be needed to transport the food collected to the centre but more information will be given. The first collection proposed is 24th November, the Feast of Christ the King.
Synod of Bishops:
Pope has convened an extraordinary Synod of Bishops to reflect on the ‘Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelisation.’ In order to prepare for this a preliminary document has been issued by the Organising team asking for peoples’ thoughts and reactions. Archbishop Cushley has asked that we all look at this and respond to him to enable him to take the views and opinions of the people of the Archdiocese into consideration when he is making up his response. Copies of the document will be distributed after Mass. There will be an opportunity to reflect and discuss it with fellow parishioners in the Church Hall art St. Cuthbert’s on Sunday 24th November, the Feast of Christ the King at 2.00 p.m. The meeting will finish with Benediction in the Church at 4.00 p.m. marking the end of the Year of Faith.
All responses whether individual or group have to be returned to Archbishop Cushley at the Gillis Centre by December 15th.
